Are you studying physics? Want to get involved in astronomy, but not sure where to start?
Join us for ICRAR’s first summer school to get a sneak peek at the world of astronomy. You’ll meet some of our astronomers, get a taste of the research happening here in WA, and get a head start on the skills you’ll need if you decide to study with us.
Who can apply?
This opportunity is open to 1st and 2nd year students studying physics at UWA.
We hope to open the summer school program to other disciplines in future years.
What’s involved?
The program runs over three days, from November 20 2023 to 22 November 2023 at ICRAR’s UWA location.
Each day will run from 10am to 5pm, with an introductory lecture on an astronomy topic in the morning, followed by a hands-on workshop in the afternoon.
The program is free, and lunch will be provided for the three days of the school.
Lectures will cover:
- Observational astronomy (with Professor Simon Driver)
- Gravitaional dynamics in the universe (with Professor Kenji Bekki)
- Cosmology and Dark Matter (with Professor Chris Power)
Workshops will cover data analysis skills, creating visualisations, and working with simulations and observational data.
The Summer School will conclude with a networking session with other working astronomers, and the option to participate in further projects with ICRAR.
Optional Research projects
Following the summer school, students will have the option to do a small or large research project with ICRAR staff, depending on availability. Projects can be completed from home, with regular weekly meetings with your ICRAR supervisor.
Students who are keen to complete a research project will have the opportunity to meet potential supervisors on November 23rd.
