Two exciting events are coming to Geraldton that promise to spark curiosity and empower the next generation of scientists and space enthusiasts.

High school students across the Mid West will have the opportunity to participate in a free  Stargirls+ STEM Camp at Geraldton Universities Centre from Tuesday 25 to Wednesday 26 February.

Supported by the SKA Observatory (SKAO) and the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR), the Stargirls+ STEM Camp is an immersive hands-on learning experience designed to encourage girls and underrepresented genders to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

ICRAR Stargirls+ Coordinator Leah Kalimeris said around  20 students from across the Mid West and as far away as Exmouth, will hear from both local and Perth-based STEM professionals.

“The camp aims to break down barriers and open doors for future innovators by building confidence, creativity and critical-problem solving skills in a fun, supportive environment,” Mrs Kalimeris.

“At Stargirls+, we are passionate about creating a space where girls and other underrepresented genders feel empowered to explore STEM fields and see themselves as the future innovators our society needs.”

The camp is supported with funding from the SKAO, an international organisation building the world’s largest telescopes in Western Australia and South Africa.

SKA-Low Commissioning Scientist Dr Shivani Bhandari, an astronomer with the SKAO said the collaboration between the SKAO and ICRAR in initiatives like the Stargirls+ STEM camp reflected a shared commitment to fostering diversity and encouraging young individuals to explore STEM fields.

“Events like this help to show students the many pathways they can take,” Dr Bhandari said.

“As a young person living regionally, you might love science, technology or engineering, but not necessarily know what options are available to you.

“I’m excited to share my passion and provide guidance to those interested in science and astronomy. So many areas in this space can be pursued, and I want these students to know they can make their dreams come true.”

ICRAR will also be holding a free stargazing sidewalk astronomy community event. Geraldton locals are encouraged to head down to the Geraldton foreshore on Wednesday 26 February from 6pm – 9pm where they can expect to see Jupiter, Mars, the Orion Nebula and other distant star clusters in our galaxy and have the opportunity to chat with our astronomers.
