Before you arrive
Travel to Perth
Perth is around 24 flying hours from New York, 18 hours from London and LA, 16 hours from Frankfurt, 10 hours from Dubai and South Africa, 7 hours from Hong Kong and approximately 5 hours from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
The Perth Domestic and International airports are about 11 km and 16 km North-East of the CBD, respectively. They are easily accessible by car, taxi/rideshare, train and bus.
Airport Central Station is located at Terminals 1 and 2 at Perth Airport and is just 18 minutes from the CBD. Trains are operating every 12 minutes in peak, every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes at night. There is a cap on fares with Transperth so you will pay no more than $5 (even less if using a SmartRider). Cash tickets can be purchased from ticket machines at train stations or SmartRider cards are available to buy from retail sales outlets across Perth, including the Smart Carte at Terminal 1, Perth Airport.
Taxi ranks are outside the terminal buildings, and fares are ~$30-35 from the domestic airport to CBD, ~$40-$50 from the international airport to CBD. Be aware of the a significant distance between the International (Terminal 1) and Domestic (Terminals 2 and 3) terminals if you are meeting someone.
Accommodation
Short stay accommodation is available at both Curtin and UWA. We strongly recommend you select an accommodation option situated near the node you will be spending most time at.
At UWA
Off-campus options also available.
At Curtin
Off-campus options also available.
Please note that ICRAR admin staff are unable to book accommodation for visitors.
Visas
All travellers to Australia must have a valid visa before boarding their plane. Participants can obtain a ‘Electronic Travel Authority‘ if eligible, or search for visas they may be eligible for. Most participants should be eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) which costs $20 and is valid for one year. The online confirmation usually takes 24—48 hours but we encourage participants to apply a few weeks prior to their departure date. Please use the direct immigration link we provide to avoid any potential scams. We can provide a ‘letter of invitation’ to invited visitors on request.
Getting to ICRAR
Visiting ICRAR
If you’re planning a visit to ICRAR, please fill out our visitor form so our friendly admin staff can prepare for your arrival and assist with your arrangements (such as organising building access and allocating your desk).
For new or visiting students to UWA, we also recommend reading the ICRAR/UWA Student Guide.
Taxis & Rideshares
In Perth, taxis and taxi drivers are regulated as are the fares charged. Taxi rank locations are conveniently located in several locations around the city and two supervised ranks operate in Northbridge on Friday and Saturday nights. Taxis can also be flagged down from the curbside.
Uber and other rideshare services are also available, with designated drop off and pick up points outside both ICRAR buildings.
The street addresses for ICRAR locations are:
- ICRAR-UWA: Ken and Julie Michael Building, 7 Fairway, Crawley
- ICRAR-Curtin: Brodie-Hall Building, 1 Turner Avenue, Bentley

Buses and Trains
Perth is separated into concentric travel zones centered on the CBD. All CAT bus and train travel within the CBD are free, however travel to UWA or Curtin from the City will cost $2-$3.
From the city, UWA is serviced by bus routes 950, 102, 107 and the free Purple CAT. More on accessing UWA by public transport.
From the city, Curtin is serviced by bus routes 960, 72, and a free shuttle to campus from Canning Bridge Station on the Mandurah Train Line. More on accessing Curtin by public transport.
Visit Transperth for schedules and maps. Transperth bus and train routes are well integrated with Google Maps and the public transport directions option.
We recommend obtaining a SmartRider travel card if you will be using public transport regularly.
Building Access
Common areas at both ICRAR buildings are accessible during normal business hours (9am-4pm), including reception desks, meeting rooms and break areas. After hours access, and access to offices and labs, may require a swipe card.
For short term visitors, a number of visitor cards are available for temporary use, and will need to be signed in and out at the beginning and end of your visit. These are available from the reception desk at each building.
For longer term visitors (two months or more) a UWA or Curtin staff card may be issued. Please discuss your access requirements with the admin team when you begin your visit.
