Cultural Astronomy, Indigenous Astronomy Research Methods

WHEN: November 5, 2024 at 11:00 am

WHERE: Pawsey Supercomputing Centre, Bryce Ave, Kensington WA, Australia

Jarita Holbrook spent over two decades in the field of Cultural Astronomy with an emphasis on both Indigenous astronomy and studies of astrophysicists and their culture.

Holbrook has designed an interactive workshop for Perth based researchers to introduce them to Cultural Astronomy.

The workshop will begin with definitions and an overview of the field emphasizing the Indigenous Astronomy aspects. Followed by research methods and theorisation, then progressing to some hands-on exercises including a Cultural Astronomy hack (bring a tablet or laptop). We will wrap up by combining our results into a collective output.

This session will be held at Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, from 11AM – 2PM. Lunch will be provided.

Warning: this presentation will include film footage of elders who have since passed away.

Presenter: Jarita Holbrook is known for their documentary films and their research in African Indigenous Astronomy. They are from California earning degrees from Caltech, San Diego State University and the University of California, Santa Cruz, in physics, astronomy, and astrophysics. They used two postdocs in the social sciences at UCLA and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science to make the transition from astrophysics. They are currently affiliated with Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the department of Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh and the Physics and Astronomy department at the University of the Western Cape. Holbrook is in Perth as the ICRAR Women+ in Astronomy Visiting Fellow at UWA and Curtin University, and is a resident at Forrest Hall.
