Harley Wood School for Astronomy 2024

This year’s event will be held at Long Point Conference Centre (close to Sydney, NSW) from June 14 (5 PM AEST) to 17 (10 AM AEST). The main theme is Bigger than Big: Across all Scales in Science and Technology.

You will hear speakers share their expertise, such as:
Sarah Brough (UNSW) – Ivo Labbe (Swinburne) – Sarah Martell (UNSW) – Manisha Caleb (University of Sydney) – Jesse van de Sande (UNSW) – Cullan Howlett (UQ) – Dougal Dobie (University of Sydney) – Amit Seta (ANU) – Fiona Panther (UWA) – Gavin Rowell (UAdelaide)

Under this year’s theme, we will cover scienctific topics in three sessions:

  • Across all Wavelengths – Looking beyond your own science can be difficult, but other fields can close gaps in your knowledge. Here’s how to get started expanding your horizon!
  • Big Surveys – Starting a collaboration and working on a big survey or simulation can be overwhelming. But these surveys provide jobs, and being involved can be an incredible career boost.
  • Big Data – With big surveys come bigger amounts of data to access and process. This needs to be done efficiently, and managed well, which our speakers fortunately know how to do.

You can get more out of your PhD if you manage yourself, your plans and your co-workers well. So the science sessions are complemented by some more advice and workshop focussed sessions on:

  • career strategising and thinking beyond your PhD
  • mental health during your PhD
  • invisible diversity & disability
  • proposal writing
